Another day of squeeeeeeing! Sent in “Crimson Heat” to Ellora’s Cave for consideration today. So happy! Now it’s off to figure out how to convert “Menage” so I can get it into the premium catalog at Smashwords! And when Menage is uploaded to the vendors then I can finally launch Spunky Girl Publishing! Wooot!

One of my New Year’s resolution is to figure out how to get a proper blog going too so folks can comment…and to eventually get a new look for my website!

For my faithful Vampira readers, I’m diligently working on the next Vampira story – Crimson Heat. I hope to have it completed and into Ellora’s Cave for consideration for their Bounty Hunter series by the end of December. The story is about a blood slave – Lisbeth Crowe who is hiding within Vampira in the human world and the three sexy bounty hunters from her past, who are sent to bring her back to the evil Queen Crimson. We also get a little peek at Christina and Zeena, daughters of Megan Bloodrayne, whom we met in Dark Heat – Vampira 2. Wish me luck to make the deadline and to get the story accepted! Wooot!

An Interview with Romance Cover Model Jason Aaron Baca

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing romance cover model, Jason Aaron Baca. Jason is a very nice fellow and he looks quite hawt on the cover of a book! He’s given us a glimpse into the world of being a romance cover model and has told me a bit about the man himself.

Jan: Please tell us a little about yourself.

Jason– Well lets see here, I’m a native of the Bay Area, CA. I played baseball in high school and college then turned to modeling after I ended my baseball career.
Today I am primarily a romance and suspense cover model.

Jan: Give us an idea of a typical cover shoot day for you.

Jason – Well I get up in the morning and stretch out my muscles. I put on an ice pack around my eyes so they don’t look tired or puffy. In the shower I shave with a Mach Triple Action blade for a close smooth shave. I use Olay’s Cool Moisturizer Body Wash followed by an Ultra Rich Shea Butter Crème body wash. Then I use an exfoliating citrus lime scrub then finally St.Ives deep action invigorating scrub. For my face I use Dove’s Cucumber Moisturizing Bar, then Clean & Clear’s Peach Nectar wash. Finally I complete my wash with Gillette’s “Thermal Face Scrub”

After toweling off I make sure to apply plenty of moisturizer since I tan in a salon often. The one I’m using now is Naturally Indulgent’s “Coconut Milk & Orchid Extract which leaves my skin feeling silky smooth. For my face I begin with Dermitage’s Anti-Wrinkle Eye Serum then Clinique’s Dramatically different moisturizing lotion. I let that soak for a few minutes while getting changed for the long day at the studio. Then I re-enter the bathroom where I then apply Clean & Clear’s Oil Free Morning Burst Shine Control Moisturizer. I try to use moisturizers with very little oil base because oil can clog pores especially around the nose.

I take my mornings in the shower very seriously because its important that I look my best for the day’s shoot. Once I arrive at the studio, there are usually people there that offer me fluids or soft drinks which I normally pass on. I do no eat until after the shoot because it will cause the abs to disappear.

Jan: Give us some titles of book covers you’ve appeared on. Is there a website where these covers are displayed?

Jason – Yes there are 80 something of them out there. The website that keeps track is http://www.romancetreasure.com

Jan: Self publishing is really big these days, how can an author or cover artist (or a publisher) contact you regarding using you on their romance covers? Do you have a website or a database of photos available?

Jan: If you weren’t a cover model, what would you be doing now?

Jason – You know I get asked that all the time and I have a hard time answering this. Before this I wanted to be a pro baseball player. That didn’t pan out. After that it went straight into modeling then to today’s romance novel modeling.

Jan: I’ve heard you are an animal lover. What is your favorite animal? Do you have any pets?

Jason – Yes I do. I have a soft spot for animals that need to bark or meow to get their points across to us. I have a cat and love her dearly.

Jan: What is your favorite pose on a romance cover novel?

Jason – I love all poses for romance novels, what “They” love to take of me is shots using my back with my profile showing. I guess that’s my good side.

Jan: Was it hard to break into the cover model business?

Jason – Yes, like everything, it took determination, defeat and understanding. I didn’t just “get it” I had to do a lot of researching. Now that I’m in it looking out, this all comes a lot easier of course.

Jan: Do you have an agent?

Jan: What did you want to be when you grew up?

Jason – I wanted to be a pro baseball player. That was as far as it went with me. I had a one track mind. I didn’t float 4-5 different ideas like most do. I pick a topic and stick to it until I get the rewards I’d envisioned.

Jan: When you aren’t shooting a cover, what other exciting things are going on in your life?

Jason – Well this is what occupies my life. When I’m not shooting a cover, I’m shooting for the various fitness magazines, most recently Men’s Health/Singapore did a layout that should be excellent. Then again Men’s Workout Magazine uses me often as their model for various exercise routines. I love all of this though so it is in my blood.

Jan: I’ve heard through the grapevine that you are also a writer? What books have you written? Where can we find them?

Jason – Yea well I gave it a shot, I’ll put it that way… I am no “author” but I did manage to write a couple books that are for models that want to learn how to become successful in the business. Jan: What are your favorite movies? Your favorite foods?

Jason – I have a lot of Favorite Movies but as for recent movies, I enjoyed Benjamin Button as well as The Wrestler.. As for old school movies, I liked the Rocky Movies.
My Favorite foods that I’m not allowed to eat are – Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, Ravioli with Creamy Pesto , Pizza with Linguica, Garlic Bread with extra butter, Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia Ice Cream, Hostess’ Chocolate Donuts, Krispy Kreme’s Jelly Filled Donuts, BBQ Beef Ribs, Greasy Taco’s from Jack n the box at 12 midnight.

Jan: What is your favorite motto? Quote?

Jason – My favorite motto is “You’re the best around, nothings gonna ever keep you down” – Karate Kid Theme song

Outlaw Lovers update!

I am almost finished my first draft of the next Outlaw Lovers story. Wooohooo! Hopefully I will have an ending by this Tues/Wed…and then the work of inputting into the computer all the longhand stuff (yep, I still do a lot of longhand work – it helps me to think – but DragonSpeak does come in very handy).
Then I have to polish and edit and all the fun stuff that goes with burping the baby. *grin*

I’m still hoping for a completion date for Christmas…*crossing my fingers*

Here’s something really neat that I picked up from one of my groups.

Where did “piss poor” come from? We older people need to learn something new every day.. just to keep the grey matter tuned up.

Where did “Piss Poor” come from?
Interesting History. They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery… .if you had to do this to survive you were “Piss Poor”.
But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot… they “didn’t have a pot to piss in” and were the lowest of the low. The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn’t just how you like it, think about how things used to be.

Here are some facts about the 1500s

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell,
brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor.
Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, “Don’t throw the baby out with the Bath water!”

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals(mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof.
Hence the saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs.”
There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That’s how canopy beds came into existence.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, “Dirt poor.” The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way.
Hence: a thresh hold.

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: “Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old”.
Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, “bring home the bacon.” They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat.

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.
Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom; “of holding a wake”.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.
Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, “saved by the bell” or was “considered a dead ringer”.

And that’s the truth. Now, whoever said History was boring!!!

Nora Roberts Sends Letter of Support for Copyright Infringement Legislation

Dear Chairman Leahy and Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee,

I strongly support Bill 3804.

Piracy eats away not only at the income of writers, but at the fabric of intellectual property. This blatant disregard for copyright not only devalues us, the creators, but the work we labor to create.

In discussions with people who feel piracy is simply the cost of doing business, or worse, that it’s their right as a consumer, I’ve been told I should be flattered so many people want to read my work–for free–that they probably wouldn’t have bought the book anyway, so it’s not really a lost sale, that there’s nothing I can do about it, so why fight it. They tell me they can’t afford to actually buy the book, but they want to read it. When I suggest the library as an alternative, I’m told the library’s too far away or the wait for the book from a library too long.

I’m told not to call it stealing or those who engage in the practice thieves because it annoys them.

It annoys them.

I say, respectfully, it annoys me when what we, as writers, have created out of our individual minds, hearts, guts is taken without compensation. When it’s taken without our consent. We do not consent to piracy. We do not consent to being devalued out of existence.

The Internet is an extraordinary tool, and with it, we can access information with a few keystrokes. But there is a difference, wide and deep, between information and creative property. We use words to express our imaginations, to tell stories that entertain, that bring comfort, offer amusement or solace. Melding that imagination with words to create a book takes work, time, effort, talent. The storyteller and the book that comes from her through that work, that talent, must be valued and respected. If piracy continues to devastate a writer’s income, to erode the ability of the publishers to make the profit necessary to bring those books to the public, where will the next generation of storytellers come from? How can they live if their individual creativity has no value?

The novelist, the novel, the publisher as the gatekeeper can’t stand against the growing assault of piracy.

Freedom is essential to us, as people, as Americans. But freedom must co-exist with the rule of law. And the law must address progress along with the benefits and complications it brings with it.

We look to you to make the laws that protect us, that protect our work, that protect and respect creative property. We look to you to stand up for us and against piracy and its growing sense of entitlement.

Without writers there will be no stories. Without stories, the world will be a smaller and much less vibrant place. Please don’t let that happen.
